Do I Need to Rotate or Flip My Mattress

Yes, you can give your mattress a longer lifespan when you rotate or flip your mattress. Let's find out why this is important.
How do I rotate my mattress?
First, let's clarify what is meant by rotating the mattress. Rotating is when the mattress is turned around 180 degrees. The result is what used to be the head of the mattress is now the foot of it. Note that rotating does not involve flipping, so after rotating you would still be sleeping on the same surface of the mattress.
How do I flip my mattress?
Flipping a mattress involves turning it over, allowing you to sleep on the other side of the mattress. To do this, you would rotate the mattress 90 degrees and so that it is hanging over one end. Then you raise the mattress on its edge, and lower the mattress over so that the other side is face up. Then turn the mattress 90 degrees further.
Therefore after flipping the mattress this way, you will be completing a rotation too. The reverse side is now face-up and what used to be the foot of the mattress is now at the head. You could in theory do the flipping without the rotation, but in practice it's always best to do a flip-and-rotate so that the mattress is used more evenly.
Rotating And Flipping Mattress
Why do I need to rotate or flip my mattress?
You need to rotate and flip your mattress so that you sleep on different areas of the mattress. This evens out the pressure on the mattress, which leads to a longer lifespan for your mattress. Rotating and flipping your mattress will also make it feel more comfortable to you, because it ensures that there is no sagging in areas which are slept on the most.
Which is better: rotating or flipping?
Flipping the mattress (with a rotation) is always better than just rotating it. This is because when you only rotate the mattress, you are only ever sleeping on one of its surfaces. When you flip the mattress, you are using the other side. This increases mattress lifespan even further.
Beware: not all mattresses out there can be flipped
The best quality mattresses allow you to both rotate and flip. But beware that not all mattresses can be flipped, and are sometimes labelled as such, for example "No need to flip" or "No flipping required".
When you are buying a mattress, you will get a longer lifespan out of a mattress which can be flipped. You may be tempted to think that a mattress which can be flipped will be an added expense, but it doesn't make as much difference to the price tag of the mattress as you might think. In fact, you will save some money in terms of having a longer lifespan of the mattress if it can be flipped.
Ultimately, you need to be aware that a mattress which cannot be flipped is likely of a much lower quality, at least on one side of it, than a mattress which allows flipping and sleeping on either side. The ability of a mattress to be flipped is in a sense a mark of its quality.
The good news is that here at Heveya® Singapore, all our mattresses are top quality and can all be rotated, flipped and slept on both sides.
How often should I rotate and flip my mattress?
For optimal care, you should rotate and flip your mattress every six months. This twice a year schedule makes it easy to do, without having to worry about it more frequently. Yet this is still recurrent enough to ensure that the pressure will be properly evened out over the mattress.
Your bed base plays a role in the wear and lifespan of your mattress
It may come as a surprise to hear that your bed base plays a role in the lifespan of your latex mattress. But when you think about it, it makes sense that a strong frame with good support at the centre will prevent your mattress from sagging and bowing. A good quality bed base will also help distribute the pressure of the mattress more evenly.
Benefits Of Using An Adjustable Slatted Bed Base With Latex Mattress
A sprung slatted base is the best type of base to use with a latex mattress as these two items are often designed to be used together. This is because the slats work to take the strain of the mattress, while delivering a natural springiness from the upwardly curved slats. As one can expect, this outward curvature completely avoids any sagging of the mattress. In this way, the lifespan of the mattress is increased.
Another advantage of a sprung slatted base is that in combination with a latex mattress, it gives you the last word in comfort and luxury. In fact, we find that our customers value very highly this instant advantage of comfort that they experience.
To get the most out of your new latex mattress, in terms of both lifespan and comfort, a sprung slatted base is recommended to be used in tandem.
